During four Sabbath afternoons in July, members and friends from the Faughan, Bready, and Gateway RP congregations gathered at the end of the Peace Bridge in Londonderry for a month of open-air worship and gospel outreach. The Lord graciously granted favourable—and at times pleasantly sunny—weather on each occasion, enabling the work to go forward unhindered. We were also encouraged by the presence of a few visitors from other parts who joined us in the witness.
A different minster led in worship on each of the four afternoons. These were in order: Rev Steven Robinson (Faughan), Rev Stephen Neilly (retired minister), Rev Blair McFarland (retired minister) and Rev Paul Wallace (Bready). At each worship service the gospel was preached plainly, prayer was offered to God for His blessing, and praises were sung in a spirit of unity. Some passers-by paused to listen for a moment, to receive a gospel tract, or simply to observe the proceedings. Several informal conversations took place with members of the general public, allowing for quiet but meaningful opportunities to speak of Christ and His saving grace.
We give sincere thanks to the Lord for His hand of protection over all who attended, for the sense of harmony He granted among the brethren, and for the privilege of lifting up the name of Christ in a public place without disruption. Such opportunities ought never to be taken for granted, and we acknowledge God’s goodness in granting us the freedom to proclaim His Word openly.
As we look back with gratitude, we also look forward in prayerful dependence. We ask the Lord to continue to preserve the liberty we presently enjoy to preach the gospel in the open air. Above all, we pray that the seed sown during those four July afternoons would yet bear fruit. Though six months have passed since then, the God who watches over His Word is able to work secretly in hearts long after the voice of the preacher has faded. May He be pleased to draw men and women to Himself through the witness given at the Peace Bridge, and may all glory be His alone.
