The 187th Synod of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America is currently meeting in Marion, Ind. Proceedings began yesterday with a time of worship, and the singing of Psalm 103 (pictured above).
Elder Jerry Milroy of the Tri Lakes Reformed Church preached the retiring moderator’s sermon to begin this year’s devotions on the theme, “The Steadfast Love of God,” click here to listen to his sermon online.
In an unprecedented move, there were two nominations put forward for this years moderator, breaking a longstanding tradition of closing nominations after the first name. Pastor Bruce Martin, of Ridgefield Park, NJ, was elected moderator of Synod for 2018. Having served as moderator in 2016, he becomes one of the few to serve as moderator for more than one RPCNA Synod meeting.
Synod paused to acknowledge the deaths of several servants of the church, including Mrs. Elaine Tweed (wife of Rev Bob Tweed), and two Elders – Seigo Kitani and Mike Tabon. Mike had dedicated much of his energy to promoting and encouraging psalm singing, and was involved in writing / arranging several of the tunes now used in the The Book of Psalms for Worship. Through out the day several of these psalms were sung including 95, 113 and 118.
New delegates were introduced to the court, including 8 new ruling elders and 8 new pastors. Fraternal delegates were introduced from OPC, PCA, Greek Evangelical Church of Cyprus, and the ARP.
There were some encouraging reports from the Global Mission Board, and the Central and South America Committee was made a Commission, which gives them authority to ordain men to office in the church. This was done with a view to organising congregations in Chile, where we are already supporting on Pastor and the work is continuing to grow. Two observers from the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Bolivia were welcomed.
Give thanks for these ways in which God in building his church! Then continue to pray for these Godly men as they begin difficult discussions regarding a judicial case today.
